ABOUT NEWMARKET

In June 1800, Timothy Rogers, a Quaker from Vermont, explored the land around the Holland River to find a suitable site for a proposed Quaker settlement.

The community’s growth was initially slow, but things began to change during the War of 1812 when the North-West Fur Company began using Yonge Street as a vital link in its fur trade network. Soon, the village began to replace York (Toronto) as the centre …

the annual distribution of “presents” to Native Peoples who were vital to the fur trade.

Newmarket was at the heart of the ill-fated Rebellion of 1837, led by fiery politician William Lyon Mackenzie. The rebellion was quickly crushed, though it did lead to reform.

During the 1820s the village was transformed into an extensive market centre for the increasingly settled region. Thus was born the name Newmarket. The arrival of the railway in 1853 led to further prosperity, allowing industries—such as the famous Davis Tannery— to bloom. Newmarket was incorporated as a village in 1857 and became a Town in 1880.

In keeping with Newmarket’s early beginning, a must-attend event is the weekly farmers market. Held every weekend from May to October at the Newmarket Community Centre it brings farmers and vendors together and creates a hive of activity reminiscent of the town’s early years as a new market. It has become the place to buy farm fresh produce, home-made baking, hand-made crafts and to meet up with friends over breakfast or lunch.

Newmarket features a diverse and growing economy based largely in the business services and knowledge industries, and the administrative, manufacturing and retail sectors.

The following are some of the town’s major public sector employers:

  • Regional Municipality of York
  • York Regional Police
  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police “O” Division, Toronto North Headquarters
  • Ontario Court of Justice / Ontario Superior Court of Justice
  • York Region District School Board
  • York Catholic District School Board

The following are some of the town’s major private sector employers:

  • Allied International Credit
  • TS Tech Canada Inc.
  • Mars Canada Inc.
  • Rockets Candy Company
  • Exco Technologies
  • Magna International
  • Snap-On Tools
  • Cintas

An interesting fact about Newmarket. In 2013, it was one of only 5 communities in Canada to receive the Google eTown Award. The award recognizes the town and cities whose businesses are leading the way in embracing the opportunities of the Internet. These cities’ businesses are investing in online tools and resources to find new customers and grow their businesses to succeed in an increasingly connected world.
