ABOUT STOUFFVILLE

Abraham Stouffer founded the then hamlet of Stoufferville in 1804. By 1832, the community’s name was changed to Stouffville when the first post office came to town. It began to grow into a bustling village with its first hotel – the Mansion House Hotel – a lumber mill (where Schell Lumber now stands), a barbershop, a coal yard and seed businesses all located on its historic Main Street. population is 45,837, a stark contrast to the 600 inhabitants on the eve of confederation in 1866.

 

Stouffville is located just North of Markham and West of Claremont and Uxbridge. You may recognize many of the smaller communities within Stouffville including Vandorf, Ballantrae, Gormley, Preston Lake, Cedar Valley, Bloomington, Lemonville, Bethesda and Musselman Lake. Stouffville itself is situated amongst the environmentally sensitive Oak Ridges Moraine. In fact, the Oak Ridges Moraine covers approximately 80% of the total area of Stouffville.

Within Stouffville lies the York Regional Forest which covers an area of 5,000 acres. Inside the forest is the Hollidge Tract, located just East of Hwy 48. The tract contains a one kilometre, accessible trail that winds through natural habitats including red pine, mixed wood and hardwood forests, as well as a wetland area.

Running through the heart of Stouffville is its main street. What was once a meeting place for local farmers is now a place for high-end shops and restaurants. You’ll find a variety of restaurants including Fishbone Bistro, Red Bulb Espresso Bar, Corner House on Main, The Smokery Kitchen & Bar, Pastaggio Italian Eatery, Fickle Pickle Restaurant and Deli and Stakeout Dining. New commercial development continues to be done within the community. The recently added Longo’s Grocery Store, Goodlife Fitness centre and Starbucks are changing this small community into a place on the move. Downtown Stouffville has become a central meeting place for local residents to enjoy farmers’ markets, music festivals and free movie nights.

In 1984 the Stouffville Strawberry Festival made its debut when it was teamed up with the town’s Canada Day Celebrations and annual baseball tournament. Today it has grown into the second largest attraction in York Region with over 30,000 people visiting the Strawberry Festival each year. The Festival Market at the Strawberry Festival features over 200 crafters, food vendors and small businesses setting up shop in and around Memorial Park, Park Drive and Burkholder St. The streets will be closed to traffic allowing festival-goers to stroll the streets and browse the market while soaking up the festival atmosphere!
